Save the Malago greenway from development as rapid transit route

We, the undersigned, petition Bristol City Council to reject any proposal to install a rapid transit route along any section of the Malago greenway and wildlife corridor outlined in the Hengrove / Hartcliffe to Bristol City centre rapid transit proposal. This greenway provides safe access for many walkers, school children, cyclists, and other recreational and business users. Its use for a rapid transit route will divide communities rather than enhance them.

This proposal, if adopted, will negatively impact upon the health and mental well-being of residents. We particularly oppose any proposal to divert or culvert the Malago River, which is an important wildlife habitat for bats, slow worms and rare species of birds.

SEFTON PARK SCHOOL IS UNSUITABLE FOR EXPANSION

The Petitioner objects to the expansion and amalgamation of Sefton Park School. The objections are due to parking and conjestion problems, loss of play and PE space, loss of community buildings and green space, the detrimental effect of large schools on children's education and well-being and the recent pressure on the head and governing bodies due to federation of the school. The petitioner believes a new school on the Brunel site, as promised, would be a better remedy for the demand for school places in the area; or failing that, a new school on the old Fairfield site, leaving St Barnabas where it is.

Direct democracy

Our local government has been a hung council for years, perhaps we should look at more effective forms of democracy for Bristol, I propose direct democracy, we take the power to decide away from the council reducing their power and putting it to the people to decide with local referendums on key local issues, perhaps quarterly.

Save Summerhill infant and primary from amalgamation

The Petitioner....wishes to reject the proposed amalgamation of Summerhill Infant and Primary schools, on grounds that the pastoral and academic quality of education would suffer: Research now supports smaller educational provision as providing enhanced teaching practice and all round results, and the proposal of amalgamation threatens this current state of good practice.
