We the undersigned petition Bristol City Council to
rejoin the Nuclear Free Local Authorities (NFLA) organisation.

Background information

We believe that Bristol's proximity to the Hinkley, Oldbury and Berkeley nuclear reactor and waste storage sites and the continuous movement of nuclear waste through the city create an unacceptable level of risk to citizens. The Government's proposed new build at Hinkley involves huge public subsidy and increased electricity prices, is not low-carbon in whole life-cycle terms, and creates massive pollution (waste) problems in the future.

Membership of NFLA is low cost (approx. £2500) for the city, will provide assistance to officers and council in dealing with nuclear questions, and will allow Bristol to cooperate with similarly affected cities and towns across the UK (approx. 50 other members including Cardiff).

Bristol is already a member of the international Mayors for Peace initiative and is joining the Cities for a Nuclear Free Europe group. Membership of NFLA will be a natural adjunct to Bristol Green Capital of Europe 2015.
