Petition
We the undersigned petition Bristol City Council to urgently install a zebra crossing and bicycle parking on Cotham Road, between Cotham School and the Rowan Tree Kindergarten.
Background information
Cotham School redevelopment opens in the summer of 2010 and there will be a new main entrance on Cotham Road. Hundreds of schoolchildren will need to cross this busy and dangerous road twice a day. Many parents bringing their children to the Kindergarten cross at this point, between fast moving vehicles.
The Rowan Tree will soon lose the unofficial bicycle parking in its front garden as this will become a play-space. Currently, there are no public bicycle parking places on this road. Secure bike parking on a widened pavement outside the Kindergarten will encourage cycling and prevent bicycles blocking the pavement and cycle theft.
The crossing would also be used by schoolchildren walking to other
schools, including St Pauls RC Primary School on Hampton Road, to
Colston Primary school on Cotham Grove, and by students walking to and
from the university. A crossing would not only provide a safe place
for all these people to cross a busy road, it would help reduce
vehicle speeds, making the whole road safer.
Since 2008, there have been three recorded collisions between cars on
this road; the Bristol Traffic web site has some coverage of this. Also a parent was hit by a car while walking to Rowan Tree Kindergarten. With the expansion of the Cotham Grammar entrance on this
road, the danger can only increase.
