To prevent the green on Begbrook Drive to be used as a travellers' site.

Background information

There are plans to establish a travellers' site of seven pitches on Begbrook Drive, BS16. This is wholly inappropriate and unsuitable for a number of reasons:

1. The ground and the roads surrounding it are too small to accommodate large caravans, and it is located directly next to a primary school;
2. The ground is situated in a private residential area and is too close to housing;
3. Travellers illegally pitched on this ground some years ago. They engaged in anti-social behaviour, upset the residents and children, and a petition was successful in having them removed;
4. The public has a negative perception of travellers, many of whom are often associated with criminal activity and anti-social behaviour. If a site is allowed, local residents will find it difficult to sell their properties, properties will very likely be de-valued, and prospective buyers will be discouraged from moving into the area;
5. It has been proven in most cases that travellers have no respect for the land they occupy. Many of them do not pay taxes. Residents in BS16 have to pay large council tax bills and there will be a concern about who will have to pay to have their waste collected. The last time travellers pitched on this ground they left it in a mess;
6. Stapleton and Frenchay are sought-after places to live because of the green spaces. Why can't the ground be left as it is for everyone to enjoy?
7. If travellers are allowed to pitch on this ground this will very likely cause tensions with local residents.
8. There are more suitable locations for travellers away from such a heavy populated area.
