We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to ensure that Bristol City Council provide sufficient primary school places in the areas of greatest demand, to enable children to be educated within their local communities and within a reasonable walking distance of their homes.

Approximately 300 families across Bristol have not been offered places at their 3 preferred schools and have joined waiting lists as their local schools are oversubscribed. This potentially means having to transport 4 year old children in buses across the city to areas where places are available, conflicting with the City's stated green objectives and obesity targets.

Background information

Following the same problems in previous years, many families with pre-school children face uncertainty regarding where they will go to school. Bristol City Council has offered approximately 300 4-year olds school places outside their communities, well beyond reasonable walking distance, in schools not identified as "preferred" schools by their parents. It is inconceivable that the Council could not have predicted this situation, and begun remedy action sooner.

Rejection reason

The petition is petitioning the Prime Minister and not Bristol City Council. Suggest the lead petitioner uses the No 10 e-petition system. http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/
