Petition

The Petitioners along with the Friends of Hebron Burial ground request Bristol City Council ensure that the future of this important site is protected from development and ensures that the site is properly maintained and managed. Due consideration needs to be given by potential buyers of the property which lies within a Conservation Area and adjacent to a listed building.

Background information

The first burial in the graveyard was in January 1858 and the last in September 1965. It contains approximately 1200 bodies, including that of Princess Caraboo. The present owner of the burial ground has not maintained the burial ground in accordance with its Restrictive Covenants.
This burial ground is the only one remaining in Bedminster, a dense urban area in south Bristol which has a general lack of green space. There is a need to avoid difficulties experienced elsewhere where such sites become privately owned, for example Arnos Vale Cemetery. We believe the burial ground should be a neat and tidy area and maintained as
an open space that is properly maintained and managed, if necessary by
Bristol City Council.
