Petition

The Petitioners request Bristol City Council to retain this valuable and highly visible resource for the travelling public in Bristol, the wider sub-region and for visitors to our city. We ask that Bristol City Council, First Group and other potential partners find a way to keep the Travel Shop in the Centre and prevent its closure and replacement by another outlet in the Marlborough Street 'bus station' which provides few Bristol City services and is not considered by many residents to be Bristol's bus station. Furthermore, we are deeply concerned about the impact that any closure would have on the actual and perceived importance of integrated public transport in Bristol.

Background information

First Bus have announced the closure in April 2009 of the Travel Shop in Colston Avenue and its replacement by an outlet in the Marlborough St bus station, which is used mainly for sub-regional and national bus/coach services. This is happening at a time when we must do whatever possible to promote integrated and more accessible public transport in Bristol. Most other cities in the UK and elsewhere have well-located, prominent and easily accessible travel information centres to provide accurate information on travel choices. These complement online resources which not everybody can access.

The opportunity exists to widen the range of services available at the Travel Shop and to more closely integrate BCC public transport personnel and operations in this location.
