Petition
We the undersigned call upon Bristol MPs, Bristol City Council and partners to object to the proposed third runway at Heathrow Airport and instead push for electrification the Great Western Main Rail Line between London and Bristol.
Background information
The Government has announced a package of transport infrastructure projects including an aspiration to electrify the Great Western Main Line from London to Bristol. There is currently no timetable, but such a move would help the economy, help the environment and assist our fight against climate change.
Electric trains are quicker, lighter, quieter, cheaper to operate and maintain, and emit less carbon dioxide than their diesel counterparts.
Unfortunately, in the same package is Government approval for the controversial expansion of Heathrow Airport. The Government wants to develop what many see as an unnecessary third runway at Heathrow Airport.
The money earmarked for the airport expansion should be used to invest in our rail links.
