Petition
We, the undersigned, petition Bristol City Council to reject any proposal to install a rapid transit route along any section of the Malago greenway and wildlife corridor outlined in the Hengrove / Hartcliffe to Bristol City centre rapid transit proposal. This greenway provides safe access for many walkers, school children, cyclists, and other recreational and business users. Its use for a rapid transit route will divide communities rather than enhance them.
This proposal, if adopted, will negatively impact upon the health and mental well-being of residents. We particularly oppose any proposal to divert or culvert the Malago River, which is an important wildlife habitat for bats, slow worms and rare species of birds.
Background information
The West of England Partnership has drawn up a shortlist of possible routes in Bristol for the rapid transit project. The suggested Hengrove/Hatcliffe to City Centre route would follow the Malago greenway between Hartcliffe Way and Windmill Hill. This would have a detrimental effect on the use of the greenway and the surrounding green spaces for recreation, cycling and walking. It would also entail diverting or culverting the Malago River, destroying a valued urban wildlife habitat. See www.malago.org for more information.
