Petition

The Petitioner asks that Bristol City Council does not close St Pius Primary School

Background information

The recent “Primary Review” of the Council has proposed that St Pius X Primary school should be closed, because it is small and currently has surplus spaces.

St Pius X is bouncing back well from extremely tough times. Four years ago it was in ‘special measures’. It was successfully led out of those and enjoyed a very positive inspection at the start of the current academic year. Just a few years ago the school had just 82 pupils; it now has 124, and numbers are still growing! That is just one small sign of the huge vote of confidence in the future of the school that parents have given it.

St Pius is a Catholic school, but it welcomes children of all faiths and none. Indeed, currently 3/4 of the children do not give Roman Catholic as their religion. Our families come to us because we are within the local community and because of the distinctive ethos our school offers. Over half of our children are on “free school meals”, which gives an indication of the level of deprivation that the school deals with.

This is an increasingly successful school, enjoyed by its pupils, supported by its local community that offers parents an alternative provision for their children. We are expecting out best SATS results this year. We do not think that an improving and popular school should be considered for closure, and we will fight this proposal most strongly.

The proposed closure comes now as a slap in the face for all the hard work put in over the last few years to turn the school around by the headteacher, teachers, governors, parents, and of course the children. Please support us in our battle for survival.
