Petition

The petitioner request that Bristol City Council allow cars carrying 2 or more to use bus lanes to encourage car sharing as a convenient and practical way to reduce carbon emmissions, local air pollution and congestion.

Background information

It is widely accepted that urgent action needs to be taken to reduce CO2 emissions by at least 60% by 2050. This level of cut will only be achieved by action in all sectors. Transport is responsible for over 25% of UK emissions and car transport for over half of this.

Car sharing on a mass scale can be part of the solution to reducing emissions from the transport sector. In simple terms, two people sharing a car journey results in a 50% drop in emissions (from that journey), 3 makes it a 66% drop and 4 a75% drop. A simple measure to encourage car-sharing such as allowing car sharers to use bus lanes would make car sharing that little bit more convenient and would increase the number of people seeing it as a viable transport method.

Websites such as http://www.2carshare.com/ are in place to facilitate matching people making similar journeys.
