Support Residence’s bid to Bristol City Council to become lease holders of 11 St Nicholas Street (The Milk Bar).

11 St Nicholas Street has been home to artist-led community Residence since 2009. We were housed here under Bristol City Council’s Capacity scheme, which supported artists with peppercorn rent deals on buildings that had been vacant for years. The scheme has proven a big success, contributing hugely to the vibrant and culturally active Bristol we see today.

11 St Nicholas Street is now going on the open market, and Residence would like to stay and take on the lease at market value. The support we've received from Bristol City Council has allowed us to grow as an organisation and we are now in a position to pay market rates.

Please support Residence’s offer on The Milk Bar by signing this petition asking that the council make us their first choice for the tenancy. Let the council know that artist led spaces are an important part of our communities, widely appreciated, and part of what makes Bristol different.

Background information

What is Residence?

Residence is a Community Interest Company that currently supports sixteen Bristol based live artists. We share space at 11 St Nicholas Street to rehearse and make new performance. We also put on events: gigs, performances, parties, exhibitions, work in progress showings, and host visiting artists for residencies. Residence artists make work that travels all over the world as well as contributing hugely to the cultural offer of Bristol.

‘The current explosion of work in Bristol has a lot to do with the mutually supportive environment of Residence’.

- Lyn Gardner (Theatre Critic for The Guardian)
