Petition

We the undersigned call on Bristol City Council to end 40 years of neglect and work with the community towards reinstating the former Cumberland Piazza in Hotwells as an attractive public open space that will meet the recreational needs of local people and mark a gateway to the City of which all citizens can be proud

Background information

This site, under the north side of the Cumberland Basin Flyover which has been neglect ed since soon after the road scheme was developed in the 1960s, is the largest public open space in Hotwells in an area significantly lacking in recreational amenities. The proposal recognises that this space also has significance beyond the needs of the immediate community. It has a role in the development of the Floating Harbour and Entrance Locks as an important heritage site. It is part of an increasingly busy hub for cycling and walking and marks an entrance to the City which currently presents the worst possible impression for the many visitors using the road routes in from The Portway and North Somerset.
Hotwells & Cliftonwood Community Association has developed a strategic framework for progressive improvements and some funding possibilities which will create a revitalised and stimulating new park, with benefits for local people, the economic development of the area and a more fitting gateway to complement the magnificent approach to the City from the Avon Gorge.
